Both the manual and AF versions have their merits and in my opinion, neither can entirely replace the other. Hence I own and use both.
- AIS 85: better at distance, better when stopped down, thus the better of them for landscape work. Wide open its bokeh is less smooth than the AF, and sharpness suffers a bit (still very good for distant subjects)...
- AFD: better at near range, markedly better at f/1.4, bokeh is smoother and more creamy. On the other hand there is curvature of field at distance with falling performance into the corners and occasional colour fringing as well...
