Upon arrival at Yangon, in the afternoon, an introductory city tour will include colonial downtown of Old Rangoon around gloriousthe 2000-year-old Sule Pagoda, Strand Road, and Yangon's China Town. Dinner at a local restaurant. Lodging at the Nikko Hotel Royal Lake.

Early morning scenic drive to Kyaikhtiyo, site of the wondrous Golden Rock pilgrimage site, via Bago with opportunity to photograph the Bago market in early light. Enroute stop to photograph the World War II Cemetery, dedicated to the 27,000 Commonwealth Forces who died in Burma, and the Sittaung Bridge, an area humming with riverside activity. In the afternoon transfer to a special open truck for a 45 minute ascent, then continue the journey up the trail to the Golden Rock on foot, accompanied by the many pilgrims who have walked from the very base of the mountain. (This trail is sometimes steep, but is smooth, and there are covered shelters every 50-100 meters to rest, and have a cold drink. Porters will be available to assist anyone who wishes help, and a "sedan chair" conveyance is available for hire for approximately $25 for those who do not wish to walk.) Covered with gold leaf, and precariously balanced over the edge of the mountain, Golden Rock is purported to be held in place, "balanced on hairs of the Buddha". Photograph the hundreds of pilgrims lighting candles, incense, and worshipping at this sacred monument, and the sun setting behind it. Enjoy the early after dark activities at the shrine, before returning to the Kyaikhtiyo Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Revisit the Golden Rock, just five minutes from the hotel, in early morning light before returning to the hotel for breakfast. Then walk part way down the mountain to the local trucks for a ride to the air-conditioned bus via Bago to Sagain for photo ops of the village monastery, four-faced image of Kyailpon, the landmark pagoda of Shwemawdaw, amd Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha. Late afternoon return to Yangon for dinner and first of two more nights at the Nikko Hotel Royal Lake.

Before sunrise, depart for the Yangon River jetty to take the local ferry boat two hours to Twantay to photograph the pottery village and handicraft workshops. Retun to Yangon by local jeeps with stops to shoot the paddy fields and villages along the way. After dinner, photograph the magnificent Shwedagon Pagodas golden bell-shaped stupas and courtyards where pilgrims will celebrate a lighting festival of 1000 oil lamps.

Before breakfast, shoot the Shwedagon Pagoda across the royal lake, botanical gardens, and local fish and fresh vegetable market. Continue morning photo ops including the 220-foot long Chaukhtatkyi Pagoda's reclining Buddha and Naga glass factory before a late lunch and drive to the airport for a mid-afternoon flight to Bagan. First of three nights accommodations with deluxe rooms at the Thande Hotel in Old Bagan.

The Bagan Plains filled with a vast panorama of pagodas at sunrise viewed from atop a temple platform begins the day, which will be filled with photo ops including the Nyaung Oo local market, the Ananda Temple -- with four huge standing Buddha images and numerous seated figures in niches around the galleried interior -- as well as a number of other interesting temples, such as Nanphaya, said to have once been the residence of King Manuha. Dusk provides another panoramic photo op from on high overlooking the Bagan Plains as the sun sets over the ruins of the thousands of picturesque pagodas.

Another Bagan morning provides an additional spectacular sunrise opportunity from a different vantage point high over the plains before breakfast. During the day such Bagan landmarks dating from the 11th century as the Dharamayangyi and Sulamai temples and other local monuments will be explored, including some by horse cart, and a lacquerware workshop will be visited.

Early morning flight to Mandalay, the city of the last Myanmar Kings. Photo opportunites in Mandalay include Amarapura, the "City of Immortals" that was the capital of upper Burma until 1850, with its gold leaf making industry, the 1784 Mahamuni Pagoda -- hosting the revered Mahamuni image cast in the 1st Century and now covered in thick gold leaves -- and arts and crafts center (puppet factory, bronze casting, stone carving, et al), Shwenandaw monastery, noted for its exquisite wood carvings, Kuthodaw Pagoda, known as the world's Biggest Book for its stone slabs, and Mahagandayone Monastery with its 8000 monks. After sunset from Mandalay Hill, dinner is at a local restaurant and first of two nights lodging is at the Mandalay Swan Hotel.

Early morning at the boat jetty provides numerous photo ops of fascinating scenes from daily life on the Ayerwaddy (Irrawaddy) River, the busiest waterway and lifeblood of the region, before cruising on a private boat to Mingun, a village of ancient monuments and beautiful landscapes, and back.

May quá mình bay bằng Mandalay Air, hihi

At Yangon
hwedagon temple in Yangon - either sunrise or sunset would be a good bet.
Remember you will have some very bright sun shining on gold plated domes and very white-washed structures - a polarizer will be your friend.

There is a very chaotic market in Yangon - I don't remember it being photogenic but that may well be my limited eye...

At Mandalay
Mandalay has a hill just past the large palace grounds (now a military base) that will give you a view over the city. As a previous poster noted - it is hot and humid and you will work for your view. It is also not that attractive a town so unless the sky is clear and view is clear I'm not sure I would bother - but that was towards the end of my trip.
However it has other attractions such as a wooden temple and a set of the Buddha's teachings where each page is separately housed in a small temple and carved on large stone tablets - you can get some interesting shots there as well. I believe in Mandalay it also possible to visit one of the temples in the A.M. when huge morning meals are provided by donors seeking merit.
There are also more colonial structures around there than most areas so keep your eyes open.

Other tips
Use US dollars and change money in town at the black market (near the sule pagoda.) the current rate is 1345 kyat per dollar. It will go up and down a bit, please bring enough cash. you are safe. You can NOT use travelers checks, or credit cards. there are no ATM machines. Bring CASH

The taxi from the airport should be about $3, but because of the rising feul costs it has gone up for sure. The rate was $10 per day and it has AC.

Another important thing is you can NOT use free email like yahoo, hotmail, ets. even AOL is banned. They have internet but it is slow. if you look you may fine a way to use yahoo, butit is difficult. photo.net was banned for years but the last time it worked. private emails from your own URL usually work. Enjoy yourself.

However, everyone that we eventually were able to talk with was very happy we were there and encouraged people to come - so buy a few things from small vendors, buy some of the cheap souvenirs that line the entryway to the temples so that some of your visit trickes down.

You have a very short time there, but I think you really should enjoy the place. We met some wonderful people there and even after all the troubles in that country there is still an energy to make things right.

Travel HCMC – Yangon via Bangkok

Sep 1 – DAY 2
Visit Yangon
- Shwedagon Paya, Reputedly over 2500 years old, legend has it that the original stupa was constructed to enshrine eight hairs of the Buddha. Over the years it has been rebuilt many times until it now towers 98 metres over the city. One of the most spectacular Buddhist shrines in Asia, it is plated with over 30 tons of gold. Kipling aptly described the pagoda as "a beautiful winking wonder." The base is surrounded by a fascinating assortment of temples, shrines, statues and pavilions.
- Sule Paya, An octagonal pagoda 46 metres high, in the centre of Yangon, said to date back over 2000 years and enshrine a hair of Buddha. Surrounded by an assortment of small shops, astrologers and palmists
- Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue, located at 85, 26th Street, is the only Jewish synagogue in Yangon. It is a colonial relic, built in 1893. Its interior is beautifully maintained.
- Mailamu Paya, located in the outskirts of Yangon, is a large expanse of land on which larger-than-life and colorful statues depicting Buddha's lives are located. Mailamu Paya also showcases a pavilion on a man-made lake, and several zedis.

Sep 2 – DAY 3
Visit Yangon

- Royal Palace (Burmese: man-da-lei nan-dau) is a walled city within Mandalay. It was built in 1861 by King Mindon, to fulfill a prophecy. The palace, although destroyed in WWI, was renovated, and was renovated recently. The palace contains several pavilions and chambers. Those who enter from the "foreigners-only gate" should expect to fill out an extensive and probing form. However, to avoid such a form, use the "locals-only gate" (myao-pao) and pay bribes to the army officials there.
It is a 4-metre high Buddha statue, made of gold and decorated with precious jewels. The image was brought from Rakhine State, southeast of Mandalay.

The Many Faces Of Burma :-)

Travel tips (collected from many sources):

1. By Sean McCarthy :
Upon arrival, each tourist must hand over $200 U.S. and receive FECs (Finance Exchange Certificates) in exchange. These certificates look like Monopoly money and can be used instead of dollars while in Burma. They can also be exchanged into the local currency, the kyat (pronounced chat).

I was told by many people who had been here that it is possible to pay off the staff at the airport with $10 to forego this unpleasant transaction.

My palms were sweaty as I nervously flexed my passport with a $10 note folded neatly inside for the pay-off. I passed the first desk without incident, the $10 not even noticed as my colourful visa was stamped. I then moved onto the other desk, and now I could see a sign written in Biro on an A4 sheet stuck to the window stating simply, "FEC."

Here we go. A short tidy man approached me.

"Please sir, you must exchange $200 dollars for FECs."

I cursed myself for not having a prepared answer for this obvious opener. So I quickly resorted to a rejoinder that usually works for me - the answer of a dumb blonde.

"REALLY? What are FECs?"

"Official government currency, sir."

"I see. No thanks. I'll change my dollars into kyats in town." I attempted to move off.

A hand gently rested on my shoulder. "No sir. You must change here. It is law."

"Oh. Eh. Is there any way that I can keep my dollars?" At this stage, I threw him a look that is often described in novels of a certain type as searching, pregnant or meaningful.

The man looked around him, but not in a particularly surreptitious fashion. "Would you like to make a present, sir?"

"A present? Ah, a PRESENT. Yes, yes, of course. I would like to make you present." With the shock of it all, even rudimentary grammar was abandoning me.

"If you want to exchange $100 for FEC, sir, you give me a $5 present. If you wish to receive no FEC, you give me $10."

My ability to look nonchalant was fading rapidly but we quickly agreed on the latter option. The girl behind the counter took my dollar-laden passport without batting an eyelid and promptly returned it empty.

"Please sign here, sir."

A large ledger-type book with scrawled names was presented to me. Oh shit. Does this mean that I am making it official that I broke the law as soon as I entered the country? I looked at the other names, very few of which looked like genuine signatures. I took the pen in my hand and tried to commit any old scrawl to paper. But in my state of excitement, I produced a carbon-copy of the signature on the back of my credit card. Fantastic. I doubt I will be hired for the next installment of The Bourne Identity.

2. Health :
If you are on medication, better prepare the necessary amount of medicine for the whole trip as it may be difficult to arrange in Myanmar.
We suggest bringing your own medical kit, as you may get different items or drugs in Myanmar.

3. Airport tax :
International departure: When leaving Myanmar, an airport tax of FEC/US$ 10. - p.p. must be paid before check-in.

Domestic departure: no Airport Tax required (March 2005, subject to change without prior notice)

4. Customs Formalities
Foreign exchange not exceeding the equivalent of US$ 2,000.- (two thousand) can be imported to Myanmar without declaration.
Any foreign currencies exceeding the amount of US$ 2,000.- must be declared as well as gemstones, jewellery, gold, electrical appliances and video cameras.

It is not permitted to bring mobile phones into Myanmar, it will not work anyhow. Every visitor may import two litters of alcoholic beverage and two cartons of cigarettes free of charge.
Gold, silver and jewellery may only be exported if acquired in a store licensed by the government.

*Prohibited and restricted items :
Playing cards, gambling equipment, antiques, archaeological items and pornography are prohibited. Jewelry, electrical goods and cameras must be declared; failure to do so may result in visitors being refused permission to export it on departure. Video cameras will be held in safe custody at the airport and will be returned on departure.

5. Money :
It is advisable to bring for personal expenses like meals, drinks, buying souvenirs etc. enough US$ in cash to Myanmar. You can use old and new US$ notes here in Myanmar.
In case of using 100 US$ notes > ONLY new notes after 1996 will be accepted.

6. Dress :
When visiting temples, pagodas or other places of religious worship, it is necessary to dress modestly, as any kind of revealing clothing is frowned upon in Myanmar.
Removal of all foot wears and socks is necessary before entering all places of religious worship.

7. Restaurants :
Yangon:
Sandy’s Myanmar Cuisine
Padonmar Restaurant
Royal Thazin Restaurant
Thai: Sabei Sabei
Jamjuree Thai Kitchen
French: J’s Bistro, perfect for lunch!!!
Le Planteur
Le Molière
Indochina: Monsoon

Mandalay:
Chinese, Thai, Myanmar: Ayeyarwady Scene Restaurant
Chinese, Myanmar: A Little bit of Mandalay
Thai: Ko’ Kitchen
Chinese, Thai, Myanmar: AmarapurA Restaurant
Myanmar, Chinese: Green Elephant Mandalay Restaurant

Inle Lake area:
Chinese, Myanmar: Ann’s Restaurant
Paramount Inle Resort (Sky Lounge Rest.)
French: Inle Lake View Resort

8. Souvenirs :
In Myanmar arts and crafts have a very long tradition and are still very much alive.
Accordingly a number of interesting souvenirs (Gems and Jewellery, Laquerware, Marionettes, Paintings, Pottery and basketry, Silverware, Tapestries) can be bought in the country and the best places to buy them are the tourist centres.

Mandalay is the so called capital of arts and crafts in Myanmar! Observe the astonish fine art of old, traditional handicrafts like woodcarving, stone carving, the famous marionettes and tapestries, gold leafs, silk weaving!!!
Inle Lake: Visit a traditional silk weaving factory in INPAWKHON village. Sure you will find some beautiful hand woven Shan silk!

Yangon: Visit Bogyoke Market also known as Scott Market, where you can find all kinds of different products!
Our favourite: small, but nice and friendly, also prices are very reasonable: MYA MAR LAR, souvenir shop at No. 62 (A) Kaba Aye Pagoda Road
Or more exclusive: Art & Deco, MEEMOSA, TRADITIONS or J's IRRAWADY DREAMS (very beautiful designs, but expensive!!!$$$)

For Jewellery enthusiasts Myanmar is really the place to go. The world's most beautiful pigeon blood rubies, star sapphires, jade and a lot of other precious and semi-precious stones are original from Myanmar. You may get a good bargain in many shops, but please be aware to buy only in licensed shops to avoid any problems with the custom clearance.

>> our tip: visit MOGOK, the city of the most famous mines! Hehehe, but since Oct. 2004 MOGOK & HPAKANT are closed for foreign visitors!

9. TIPS& Prices

We would suggest to pay tips in the local currency and not in US$ or other foreign currencies.

For the Hotel porters: per luggage: 300.- Kyats per suitcase, but it depends on area. At train station, airports etc. it might be even 500.- Kyats per suitcase.

At local restaurants: approx. 500 Kyats per person - depends again on the service you got!

International Hotels: : you have to check it out: mostly service is included! But we suggest asking at the reservation desk for tip box, the tips will be equally shared. Also up to your decision!

Prices :
The cost of living in Myanmar depends very much on where you are: While in an expensive hotel a beer may cost you 3.- / 5.- US$ you might get it for about US$ 1.-(or its equivalent in Kyat) in a local restaurant. Generally spoken, Myanmar is a low-priced country but as soon as you go for imported articles the price level easily matches the one in Thailand or even other Western countries - import taxes are rather high! As long "as you go local" you might pay one fifth of the price!

10. LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

Please don't forget you travel in an underdeveloped country, where events are less predictable than it is usually the case, for example, flight schedules may change without prior notice. Some hotel & service standards may not approach Western expectations.

By reading all details, some would say warnings, but don't think it's a risk to go to Myanmar! We just want you to know that Myanmar is not Europe, North-America, Singapore etc.! But that is exactly our beautiful country's Charm! Travelling through unspoiled areas, visit hill-tribes, enjoy fantastic beaches, and meet the locals to get touched by the friendliness and hospitality what you can not find anymore in most other countries

*****Delayed baggage arrival or lost baggage after an International flight

Please note, that at the moment so many times the clients do not get all their suitcases upon arrival in Myanmar, due to the International Airlines baggage handling outside of Myanmar!

Therefore we suggest packing following things in your hand luggage:

Urgent needed medicines
1 T-Shirt or light shirt/blouse
some underwear for 1 day

Have a great trip !!!!!

4. Nếu xài tờ đô 100, thì loại từ năm 1996 mới sử dụng được.

5. Ở sân bay có thể bị bắt buộc đổi tiền (US$200) tỷ giá thấp, lén đưa US$10 cho officer -> cho qua

6. Nên mang thuốc (medicine) theo

. Ở sân bay có thể bị bắt buộc đổi tiền (US$200) tỷ giá thấp, lén đưa US$10 cho officer -> cho qua -> SAI
. Internet mail không dùng được -> SAI
. Luôn cho tiền tip - khoảng 300-500K -> SAI
. Mất hành lý -> SAI
